Bits and Pieces

This has been a rather uneventful week. Not that I’m complaining mind you. A little peace and quiet is a good thing! I covered a couple of movie screenings this week, both of which I liked for the most part. I also had a conversation to clear up some concerns I’ve been having with this drama group I’m working with now. And there’s always music!
This week I saw 30 Days of Night and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. I had issues with both movies but nothing big enough to ruin my enjoyment (certainly not like Good Luck Chuck or The Heartbreak Kid, both of which I disliked a great deal). 30 Days of Night is a somewhat different take on vampires based on a series of comic books. I thought the ending was a little silly but I liked most of the movie. A lot of gore, so if that sort of thing bothers you it may not be your cup of tea. These are not your romantic, Gothic vampires… these are your alpha-predator vampires. I did like the way the tension ramps up in the opening act though, too many “horror” films go right for the throat these days.
Elizabeth: The Golden Age is a sequel to 1998’s Elizabeth. Again, there were a few elements to the film I thought didn’t work (too much emphasis on the at-sea combat with the Spanish Armada for example) but overall I really enjoyed it. I do have an appreciation for historical dramas and the costumes and settings in this one are lush and beautiful. Great acting for the most part also. If you are interested in the Elizabethan age and enjoy a little intrigue and romance you might like this one.
On to drama… after a long hiatus I decided to take on a theater project again. I mentioned a few weeks ago that the kick-off was a little rough. Things hadn’t really improved much with the passage of time. I finally called the guy that runs things last night before rehearsal and had a fairly open and honest conversation with him about how I was feeling and what I thought needed to change if things are to succeed. I think it went well, and last night’s read-through went much better. Sometimes it really helps to just get things out in the open so they can be dealt with. I feel better about this project now and while it won’t be everything I had hoped, I think it has the potential to be fun. Good enough for me!
Did I mention music? I can’t wait, just one more week (ok and a weekend) and I’m seeing Pinback in concert here in Seattle! I’m so excited. I’m sure they’ll be playing a lot of tunes off their latest album which was very good. This is one of my favorites…
I’ve got shows lined up the next couple of months. In November I’m seeing Kathy Griffin and in December, I already have tickets for Trans-Siberian Orchestra (Thanks to Al for the head’s up on that one!). Sounds like a fantastic way to close out 2007 to me!
This weekend, nothing major planned. It’s been a couple of weeks since I got out with the camera so I hope to do that at least. The weather isn’t looking too bad, so I think I might go wandering in search of fall colors.

Are they singing “Clay Pigeon?” Just checking.
Glad the theatre situation has improved. I can’t wait til you tell us more about it.
Not going anywhere near 30 Days of Night, but I am interested in Liz/Golden Age. I saw some of the amazing costumes on display recently at The ArcLight. Should be fun… I’ll bring a book to read for during the war at sea. lol

I’d love to see your newest theatre production! Keep me in mind, ok?
I can’t believe how gorgeous the fall leaves are! I may have to venture out a bit too. It’s probably going to be our last good weekend for a while, eh?

I wasn’t sure about 30 Days of Night. It look interesting, but as you said, horror isn’t always done correctly. I love concerts but haven’t been to one in a little while. I wanted to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra when they come to town in December. I hope I can score some tickets.
Try to hold on to the beautiful leaves and decent weather for another week or so. We’re on our way out there soon. There’s virtually no color on the trees here yet.
I don’t know how I missed this post…but what theater production are you doing? What theater? I have a friend who used to do a lot of theater in Tacoma (Tacoma Little Theater I think it was called?) and I loved going to see her plays, they were so much fun.
Very cool Mike, I look forward to hearing more about it.
Those concerts sound like fun too, but I think I’ll pass on both of those movies.
