It’s Watching Me…

Maxtor One Touch 4 External Hard Drive

I upgraded my computer today courtesy of an early Christmas gift from a business associate for which I do a little freelance software development. I’ve been squeezed for disk space now and making noises about adding another hard drive. My friend caught wind of those plans and presented me with a nice external hard drive. Combined, I now have around 1.25 terabytes of storage on my main computer. That’s all good… but I have to confess, this new drive is kinda freakin’ me out…

The drive is a Maxtor One Touch 4 (500GB model). Installation consisted of unpacking it and plugging it in. One power cord, one USB 2.0 cord. Honestly, the hardest part was finding an open power outlet. That all went great and it seems to work really well. None of this caused me the slightest concern.

No, it’s the physical appearance that’s making me nervous. This thing is like a miniature, black obelisk sitting on my desk. It’s pretty much silent. With a single, white LED illuminating a frosted, rectangular button on the front. What starting working on my mind was after it sat for a while, the LED started pulsing. Slowly dimming and brightening. Kind of like a Cylon. Like it’s watching me. Thinking things it shouldn’t be thinking.

I better unplug it when I go to bed… better safe than sorry.

Wow. Very substantial and ominous. You should name it Hal. lol

It would be decidedly less ominous if it was pink with orange polka-dots.

    Wah. I want one.
But then I’d have TWO hard drives to worry about crashing.

Even the name sounds powerful and a bit all-knowing. I’d unplug it at night too…just to be safe.

Could be an alien communication device in disguise…I’d definitely unplug it at night just to be safe. What a thoughful gift though…

Anything that ends in “-tor” probably can’t be good for you in the long run. Good call on unplugging it!

I have so many lights blinking in my computer room, it looks like Christmas 24/7.

Yeah, unplug it. Better safe than sorry, right? :)
