Welcome to Fantasy… errr… Weekend

No, not *that* kind of fantasy… get yer mind out o’ the gutter! The kids were over and we were *watching* fantasy movies! We picked up a copy of Stardust on Saturday to watch (even though we’ve all seen it). I really do like this movie a lot. It’s not perfect but I gave it a favorable review when it originally hit theaters.

When we were done with Stardust, we decided to watch a second movie. We’re fans of double features in case you hadn’t picked up on that. One of my quirks though is that if I’m going to watch two movies in a row, they have to be related somehow. There has to be a theme, whether it’s two movies of the same genre, the same actor, director, something. It just can’t be two random movies. We poked through my library of DVDs a bit and pulled out a candidate. Any guesses what it might have been? Keep reading to see if you were right!

If you said, The Pricess Bride you were close. We discussed it, I of course have a copy but we’ve watched it many times and I wanted to introduce the kids to something new. So I pulled out the Ultimate Collector’s Edition of Legend. I had to convince Matt to watch it as he’s not a fan of Tom Cruise. Fortunately I won him over by pointing out we’d watched several other films directed by Ridley Scott recently and that Tim Curry was in the film. Unfortunately, hardly anyone I ask has ever seen this movie. It’s not *especially* notable but it is a decent romantic fantasy story.

Legend is interesting in that there are two soundtracks available for the film. The European release featured an orchestral score by American composer Jerry Goldsmith. This score is also used on the director’s cut of Legend which we watched this weekend. The shorter, US theater release (I have that one too) featured a completely different soundtrack by German electronic group Tangerine Dream. This version of the soundtrack also included several pop songs, one of which is an all time favorite love song. I made the kids watch the video for this song after the movie. I think they enjoyed the experience, but they’re both old enough and bright enough to humor me so it’s hard to say… heh heh.

Oh, the song you ask? It’s “Is Your Love Strong Enough” by Bryan Ferry.

Princess Bride- I love that movie. Double features are great and it’s essential that they go together.

Oh my gosh, I have watched this movie SO many times! It was a weekly regular when I was a teen and in college, and I still play selections from the soundtrack often, most notably “Is Your Love Strong Enough”. I’ve not seen this in some time, so I’m going to look for it this week.

I’ll rent Stardust, too, for I’ve not seen that yet.

B has both soundtracks (!), and the collector’s edition. I really like Tim Curry, but those wobbly unicorn horns pull me out of the story every time. lol
